The King Marfa Upsets Firecracker Futurity (G2) Field

VINTON, LA–JULY 4, 2026– The King Marfa surged past heavily favored Mucho Man Lady in the final strides to capture the Grade 2 $270,810 Firecracker Futurity on Saturday night at Delta Downs.

Ridden by J. Ramirez, The King Marfa tracked the early leader before rallying late to score a head victory in the 350-yard futurity. The bay gelding stopped the clock in :17.710 and earned a 93 speed index while collecting the $140,875 winner's share of the purse.

Owned by Alfonso Rangel and trained by Santiago Villaseca, The King Marfa was bred by Bella Vista Farms LLC. The $13,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate is by All American Futurity (G1) runner-up The Marfa Lights and out of the BV Travelin Soldier mare BV Heavenly. His female family traces to three-time champion AB What A Runner ($1,342,389), winner of the All American Futurity (G1).

The victory improved his record to 5-2-1-1 and boosted his earnings to $160,640. Earlier this season, he finished third in the Old South Futurity.

Fastest qualifier and race favorite Mucho Man Lady held the lead until the closing strides before settling for second under Jorge Garcia. The filly also earned a 93 speed index after covering the distance in :17.722.

Owned by Ruse Ranch LLC and trained by Jose A. Garcia, the Texas-bred daughter of KJ Mucho Macho Man is out of the Cosmograph mare Cosmo Traffic. Prior to the Firecracker Futurity, she captured both the Grade 2 Louisiana Downs Futurity and the Old South Futurity.

With the runner-up finish, Mucho Man Lady's bankroll increased to $162,659 from six career starts.

Jess Diamonds R Wild finished third under Noe Castaneda after overcoming trouble at the start and posting a 90 speed index in :17.810.

Owned by Ky Luddington and trained by Viviane Hill, the filly was bred by RJ Ranch LLC and sold for $35,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. She is by world champion Apollitical Jess and out of the FDD Dynasty mare Diamonds R Forever B.

The filly now owns a record of 5-0-0-3 with earnings of $40,044. Earlier this year, she finished fourth in the Old South Futurity.

Ct Cyber Crime finished fourth and was followed by Cant Uncle, Dk Marney 123, Kissin What, and Mojito Your Train. Bolo Cowboy and Favoreson Mv were scratched.
