Wise Filly Earns First Stakes Victory in Jones Bloodstock Insurance Starter Stakes

SELMA, TX—JULY 24, 2026—Wise Filly earned the first stakes victory of her career Friday night with a determined head win in the $37,400 Jones Bloodstock Insurance Starter Stakes at Retama Park.

Ridden by Francisco Calderon, Wise Filly dueled throughout before prevailing in a driving finish while covering 350 yards in :18.171 and earning an 86 speed index over a fast track.

Trained by Ricardo Aguirre for owners Thomas and Jodi Hoffman, the 5-year-old mare was bred in Texas by R. E. Wise. The daughter of Hawkeye out of the Streakin La Jolla mare Adorably La Jolla improved her record to 14-3-2-4. The $22,440 winner's share of the purse boosted her lifetime earnings to $50,279.

When asked about the break, Calderon said Wise Filly did not leave the gate perfectly but quickly recovered.

"It moved a little bit, but it made up the ground real quick. Thank God it got there first."

Zef Lucky Seis finished second under H. Hernandez for owner and trainer Arturo Garcia. The 6-year-old gelding entered the race off a finalist effort in the Grade 2 Willie Hickman Memorial Stakes and now owns a record of 29-4-1-4 with earnings of $61,457.

Still seeking his first stakes victory, he has also been a finalist in the Grade 2 B.F. Phillips Jr. Stakes, the Dr. Glenn Blodgett Stakes, and the Sam Houston 550 Stakes.

Alejandro Zuniga guided This Eagles Quirky to a third-place finish for owner and trainer Isidro Mancillas-Lopez. Bred by Andres Guerra, the 3-year-old filly is an $11,000 repurchase from the TQHA Yearling Sale.

She is sired by This Is An Eagle and out of the Jet Cartel mare Quirky Myrt. Coming off a finalist effort in the La Villita Stakes, she now has a record of 13-2-3-2 with earnings of $32,547.

Hellofaneagle finished fourth and was followed by Vp Rocket Ryon, Regal King, Run Nellie Run, A High Spade, and Mexican Runnaway. Dash Jess Quick, Duke Watters, and Tunda Mighty Bug were scratched.
