First Moonflash Faces World Champion Today in Championship at Sunland Park(G1) Repeat Bid

SUNLAND PARK, NM—DECEMBER 26, 2009—Perennial world record holder First Moonflash will face off with the reigning world champion Stolis Winner today (Saturday) in the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park(G1).

The ninth edition of the 400 yard event will be the fourth race on today's card. Post time is 1:37 p.m. (MST), and can be seen live on AQHA’s Q-Racing Video.

World champion A Ransom, co-world champion Streakin Sin Tacha and champions Mongoose Jet Eye, Fredricksburg, Gotta Get and Ketel Won are just a few of the past Championship at Sunland Park(G1) winners.

Defending Championship winner First Moonflash defeated champion Ketel Won last year while setting a world record for 400 yards. Racing for owner's Pierre and Leslie Amestoy and Maria Gonzalez, he is the leading contender for champion aged stallion honors with a 2008 record that boasts six wins in seven starts, earnings of $326,240, four track records and three world records. Installed as Saturday's 1-1 favorite, last season he also set a track and world.

Saddled by Andres Gonzalez and ridden by Alejandro Medellin , all of his wins including the Bank of America New Mexico Championship Challenge (G1), Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2), New Mexico Breeders’ Championship (RG2), New Mexico Classic Cup Championship (RG1) and Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) were at New Mexico race tracks.

The First To Flash 4-year-old's only loss came in Oklahoma City in the Remington Park Invitational Championship (G1), where he finished fifth in a race won by Separate Bet.

Reigning world champion Stolis Winner will be looking to stop First Moonflash's win-streak and become the breed's all-time leading money earner.

The home-bred gelding racing for Jerry Windham only needs $95,672 to take world champion Refrigerator's 14-year reign as the all-time money earner. He currently sits third on the list just $1,691 behind the world champion Blues Girl Too.

Trained by Heath Taylor and ridden by champion jockey G.R. Carter, Jr., the Stoli gelding won last year's All American Futurity(G1), Rainbow Futurity(G1) and Heritage Place Futurity(G1). He also posted the fastest qualifying time for the Texas Classic Futurity(G1) but sidelined with an injury.

Following surgery he made his debut with a qualifying effort in the All American Derby(G1), but settled eighth after a disastrous start. He regained stride, finishing second in the Dash For Cash Derby (G1) and winning the Texas Classic Derby (G1), both at Lone Star Park. He morning line has been set at 7-2.

Reigning champion 3-year-old gelding Noconi has been consistent this year, never finishing worse than second in his five starts as he pushes closer to the million-dollar mark in earnings.

The 4-year-old who races for his breeders R.D. Hubbard and Johnny T.L. Jones, have three wins this season including the Higheasterjet Handicap (G3), Mr Jet Moore Stakes (G3) and Lovington Handicap (G2). He was second in the Refrigerator Handicap(G1) and the Zia Park Championship.

Trained by Paul Jones and ridden by Cody Jensen, the Mr Jess Perry gelding's morning-line has been set at 4-1.

Arizona invader Ryless Boy has been installed at 5-1 on the morning line, after moving up the ladder from claiming ranks into a breakout 4-year-old season. Racing for Gerardo Ochoa Pena, the Heza Motor Scooter gelding has won three of five starts this season including the Bank of America West/Southwest Challenge Championship(G3).

Trained by his owner and ridden by Joe Ruiz, he finished third in his last start, the Bank of America Challenge Championship(G1) at Los Alamitos Race Course on October 31st. He has won 10 of 22 lifetime starts and earned $109,334.

Completing the field are Jess Zoomin, Mr Jesses Corona, A First Caller and Easy Dashin Sixes.

Sunday’s feature races are the $131,707 Grade 2 Sunland Park Winter Quarter Horse Derby, the $224,407 Grade 2 Sunland Park Winter Quarter Horse Futurity and the $50,000 Bold Ego Handicap. There will be no live racing on Friday, Christmas Day. Post time on Saturday and Sunday is 12:25 p.m.
