Red Dasher Wins First Race For 2-Year-Olds At Los Alamitos

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—APRIL 9, 2011—Ed Allred’s Red Dasher flew out of the gate from post number one and cruised to an easy 1 ¼ length victory to win the first baby race of the year at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Ridden by the outstanding newcomer Antonio Alberto and trained by Scott Willoughby, Red Dasher covered the 300 yards in a time of :15.518.

Sired by Tr Dasher and out of the nice Corona Cartel mare Coronas Rouge, Red Dasher came into this race after posting a couple of good morning workouts. The sorrel gelding had the ninth fastest of 25 drills on March 8 when working 220 yards in :12.60. Then on March 19, he worked 220 yards in :12.30 while posting the fourth fastest of 49 drills.

“He’s a fast breaking horse,” Willoughby said. “He does everything right and loves to train. He is eligible to run in the Kindergarten Futurity trials. I’m training a lot of TR Dasher babies this year and he’s among the ones that I like the most.”

Red Dasher’s mother, Coronas Rouge, was an allowance winner at Los Alamitos in 2006. She also finished second in a trial to the Grade 1 $440,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity and finished seventh in the PCQHRA Breeders final to Tac It Like A Man.

Willoughby’s barn is also home to Allred’s Once Over, a colt by Walk Thru Fire out of the multiple stakes winning mare Look Her Over. Once Over has been one of the most impressive babies to work at Los Alamitos so far this year.

“I love him,” said Willoughby. “He looks the part of a very nice horse and he is extremely smart and talented. We’re giving him a couple of weeks to prepare for his start before the trials to the Ed Burke Million Futurity trials.”

Once Over’s first official work was a :12.30 on March 17 before returning with a stellar :12 flat clocking on March 29. His mother, the young broodmare Look Her Over, saw action in 14 stakes races in her career and won the AQHA Members Plus Stakes and California Breeders 550-Yard Sophomore Stakes.

She also finished second in the 2008 Grade 1 $250,000 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap at 400 yards and third in the 2008 Grade 1 $200,000 Los Alamitos Invitational Championship at 440 yards. She also ran in the Los Alamitos Super Derby, PCQHRA Breeders Derby and La Primera Del Ano Derby in 2007.

The next baby race will take place on Sunday night at the Orange County track. Several baby races are expected to be carded next week at Los Alamitos Race Course.
