$250,000 Favorite Cartel Colt Is Sale Topper Day 1; Yearling Average Up 9% From 2022 Opening Session

$250,000 Favorite Cartel Colt Is Sale Topper Day 1; Yearling Average Up 9% From 2022 Opening Session

LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA—SEPTEMBER 30, 2030–Felix A. Gonzalez purchased a Favorite Cartel colt out of the Walk Thru Fire broodmare Bartiromo for $250,000 to top the opening session of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale here on Saturday afternoon.

Consigned by Burns Ranch, Hip 80 Wire Fraud is a full brother to 2023 Governor’s Cup Futurity finalist Market Analyst and a half-brother to 2022 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity runner-up Mornings With Maria, who also qualified to the Governor’s Cup Futurity last year and the PCQHRA Breeders Derby this year.

Wire Fraud was one of six yearlings that sold for over $100,000 during the first of two days of the Equine Sale. 

Saturday’s session had 83 yearlings sold for $2,672,100 for an average of $32,194. That figure represents a 9% increase on the yearling average from last year’s opening session of $29,508. All in all, day one had 90 horses selling for $2,712,100 for an average of $30,134. The total receipts from all hips increased by 2% from last year’s strong opening session.

Jose Flores, Agent, purchased Hip 113 Reputable, a Favorite Cartel colt out of the stakes winning mare Enjoy The Walk by Walk Thru Fire, for the session’s second highest selling price of $192,000. Consigned by Burns Ranch, Reputable is a full brother to Grade 1 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Champions and Grade 1 Vessels Maturity winner Chocolatito. Reputable is a half-brother to stakes winner Stolen Lives and Eagles Soar.

Cavaletti Equine Logistics purchased the third highest seller on Saturday when acquiring Hip 75 Inthepipefivebyfive for $185,000 from Vista Equine Colorado LLC, Agent for Veronica Gail Kawananakoa. Inthepipefivebyfive is a colt by the great Corona Cartel out of the stakes winning mare Zigfield Follies by One Famous Eagle. Inthepipefivebyfive’s catalog page is filled with black type that includes Dashing Folly, PYC Paint Your Wagon, Mi Angela, Jess A Dashin Angela, etc.

Ed Allred purchased the fourth and fifth highest seller on day one from the Burns Ranch consignment. Allred bought Hip 111 Defending Champion for $180,000 and Hip 110 Nationalist for $170,000. A colt by Favorite Cartel out of Eagle On The Fly, Defending Champion is a full brother to two-time Grade 1 stakes finalist Eye On The Sky. Sired by Favorite Cartel and out of Dont Pass Bar, the colt Nationalist is a full brother to the stakes winner Doctor Gene and a half-brother to AQHA champion aged mare Quirky.

Completing the list of six-figure yearlings is Hip 78 Devils Tower, a Favorite Cartel colt out of the great producer Babe On The Fly. Purchased by Hector Alcala for $115,000 from the Burns Ranch consignment, Devils Tower is a full brother to Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity winner Little Talks and Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million runner-up Ali Babe Foose. Devils Tower is also a half-brother to Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby winner Rock You.

Edward Allred was the leading buyer on day 1 with four purchases for $426,000. Jose Flores, Agent had five head for $259,000 and Felix Gonzalez had the one for $250,000.

Burns Ranch, Agent was the leading consignor/or agent on day 1 with 28 head brining gross receipts of $1,475,000. Vista Equine Colorado, LLC, Agent for Veronica Gail Kawananakoa had four head bring $285,000 and Edward C. Allred sold 17 head for $269,500.

Favorite Cartel was the leading yearling sire (by average, two or more sold) on day 1 with 11 yearlings averaging $105,455. Jess Good Candy sold three for a $36,667 average and FDD Dynasty had two for a $33,00 average.
