Eyez Of Cartel Posts Top Mark In Spring Classic Maiden Frolic Oaks Trials

POCATELLO, ID—MAY 9, 2021—Under jockey Jesus Canales, Eyez Of Cartel held off Coronados Fantasy by a neck to set the fastest qualifying time for the Spring Classic Maiden Frolic Oaks (not black type) Sunday afternoon at Pocatello Downs.

In 2021 Pocatello Downs split the "Spring Classic Maiden Frolic" into two races by adding an "Oaks" version for fillies and mares. The 10 qualifiers, from three trials contested for maidens as of January 1, will return to Pocatello Downs on Saturday, May 22nd to vie for the winner's share of a $21,500 purse going 300 yards.

Saddled by trainer Jere Brinkerhoff, Eyez Of Cartel race to her second consecutive win by completing the 300 yards in :15.494 seconds, equaling a 99 speed index and establishing the top mark.

Racing for owner Michael Mckell, the 3-year-old daughter of multiple stakes sire Five Bar Cartel, entered the trials off a maiden win at Weber Downs April 18th. In four starts at two she was winless at Los Alamitos Race Course as a 2-year-old. Ruben Magallanes bred the brown filly in Oregon from the FDD Dynasty mare Angel Eyez.

Runner-up Coronados Fantasy, a Utah bred daughter of multiple stakes sire Coronado Cartel, held on for the second fastest clocking of :15.534, a 98 speed index. Trainer Jeremy Hoyt named jockey Jesus Valenzuela to ride the bay filly.

Racing for owner Garret Hoyt, Coronados Fantasy was sixth in her only start at 2 and finished third in a maiden race at Weber Downs April 18th. Stephan and Lisa Ralston bred the filly from the First Down Dash mare Catalina Fantasy.

Tricky Dasher, under jockey Dallas Erickson, completed the 300 yards in :15.638 seconds, equaling a 95 speed index, to post the third fastest time in the second trial. The daughter of leading sire Favorite Cartel showed late interest to get past Makin Candy by a half-length.

Trainer Kyle Dahike saddled the Idaho-bred filly to her first career win in 11 starts for owner J.P. Sample. Out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Laters Baby, Tricky Dasher was bred by John Firth.

Getting her second career win, in as many starts, Oh Mi Honey would not be denied when she defeated Bw Easy Wagon by half-a-length in the first trial. Jockey Jesus Valenzuela rode the 3-year-old daughter of Turbulent Times to the fourth fastest clocking of $15.685 seconds, a 93 speed index.

Riley Moosman conditions the Utah homebred for owner-breeder Michael W. Isom. Out of the Stoli mare Mi Stoli, Oh Mi Honey broke her maiden at Weber Downs on April 17th.
