Lil Kool Wagon Sires 5 Qualifiers To Cyclone Derby, Including Fastest Qualifier Lil Pete El Soruyo

Lil Kool Wagon Sires 5 Qualifiers To Cyclone Derby, Including Fastest Qualifier Lil Pete El Soruyo

ALTOONA, IA–JUNE 25, 2022–Prairie Meadows and IQHRA hosted two races Saturday evening slotted for the $63,400 estimated Cyclone Derby trials. 

Seven of the 14 horses competing in the 350 yard derby for Iowa bred three year olds were by Lil Kool Wagon. Five of those horses sired by Lil Kool Wagon will be returning to the finals, including fastest qualifier Lil Pete El Soruyo.

Ridden by Alfredo Triana, Jr. Lil Pete El Soruyo started middle of the pack and gamely moved his way up the lane to win by a neck in :17.464 seconds, clocking a 99 speed index on a fast track. This victory from trial #2 was the first career win for the gelding son of Pistolpaknprincess by Rare King bumping his lifetime earnings to $15,955. 

Owned and bred by Humberto Rivera, Lil Pete El Soruyo is trained by Stacy Belt, who was one of three trainers who had only one horse competing in the trials. 

Tony Jones conditioned four of the 14 contestants in the trials, with all of them returning to the finals, including second fastest qualifier Watch Me Clock Doc and third fastest qualifier Candy And Corona.

The only horse on the field by Docs Best Card, Watch Me Clock Doc clocked the second fastest time in :17.491 seconds, placing only a neck behind Lil Pete El Soruyo. The Richard Tobin owned filly was bred by Rick Stramel.

The Cyclone Derby trials was the first out in 2022 for third fastest qualifier Candy And Corona and her second career win, making her lifetime earnings $24,683. 

The Jess Good Candy filly clocked a 99 speed index in :17.494 seconds on a fast track to win the first of two trials. She rallied for the finish to win by a head over post-time favorite Rakin In MC who had led the field from the gates. 

Owned by Risk Takers Partnership and bred by Craig Kirby, Candy And Corona is out of Cartels Belle by Southern Cartel. 

Stacy Charette-Hill was the only other trainer with more than one horse out of their barn returning to the finals and Apollitical Jess was the only other stallion to sire more than one qualifier to the Cyclone Derby.

10 of the 14 horses racing in the the Cyclone Derby trials will return on July 9th, 2022 at Prairie Meadows to vie for the $63,400 estimated purse.
