Veltman was trackside to watch the race named in her honor. A native of Michigan, she is ranked 13th on the list of all-time leading jockeys by wins. Overall, she won 71 races and more than $1.1 million to lead all female Quarter Horse jockeys, including her daughter Natasha Perez, who rode prior to converting over to training a few years ago. Veltman also holds the record for most wins by a female Quarter Horse jockey in one season, scoring 16 during the 2013 meet. She also established the earnings record for female jockeys that same year with $255,833 accumulated.

Veltman retired in 2013 after riding for 21 years. She was among the leading riders in both Michigan and Indiana during her career, including a Leading Quarter Horse Jockey title in 2005 at Harrah’s Hoosier Park.
