Blane Wood has conditioned the earners of more than $14 million, including champions Leading Spirit ($811,413) and Haulin Pass ($178,855), and won last year’s Rainbow Futurity (G1) with Ms First Prize Rose ($543,595). Based in Lubbock, Texas, he and his son Trey have one of the most successful training operations in the industry. Last year, Trey in his own name sent out the earners of more than $2.4 million, and in his career since 2006 the earners of more than $8.43 million. With qualifiers Bodacious Eagle and Sam Crow in this year’s All American Futurity, Blane Wood is the son of Leo Wood, who in 1979 sent out champion Pie In The Sky to win the All American Futurity (G1).

Ricky Ramirez rode Bodacious Eagle on the second day of trials, after being the only rider other than champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. to qualify a finalist on the first day. The sport’s third-leading rider in 2013, when he rode 104 winners and posted a career-best aboard the earners of $3,073,406, Ramirez since 2003 has ridden the earners of more than $18.37 million. He came into the trials with 33 winners from 281 mounts this year, with a career total of 44 stakes wins and 735 other wins from 4,721 starts. Riding first-call for the father-and-son training operation of Blane and Trey Wood, Ramirez won last year’s Rainbow Futurity (G1) aboard Ms First Prize Rose, the 2012 Heritage Place Futurity (G1) aboard BP Cartels Alibi and the 2010 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) aboard Bodacious Dash.

Sam Crow scored his third career and second consecutive victory when he won the ninth trial by 2 lengths. In his first race, in the March 29 trials to the Sam Houston Futurity (G2), the gelding finished ninth after he shied from a rival. He broke his maiden in his next start, on April 10 at Houston, and then shipped to Ruidoso, where he finished second in his May 22 trial to the Ruidoso Futurity (G1) and second to Lethal Express in the June 8 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational (R). In his last start before the All American trials, he stumbled at the break but recovered in a big effort to win his July 3 trial to the Rainbow Futurity (G1), but in a non-qualifying time for the final.

Pedigree: Sam Crow is one of 143 winners from 240 starters in four crops raced by Valiant Hero, a Grade 1-winning earner of $668,633. Valiant Hero is a son of First Down Dash, the world champion who is the all-time leading sire, and the champion Chicks Beduino mare Corona Chick, who is the all-time leading dam of money earners. Valiant Hero is the sire of champion and All American Derby (G1) winner Feature Hero ($1,399,910) and Houdini, an earner of $901,449 who on July 19 won the Rainbow Derby (G1). In addition, Valiant Hero has sired 18 other stakes winners and the earners of more than $8.85 million, including Mighty B Valiant ($543,968), Valiant Lil Lady ($517,604), One Valiant Hero ($382,393), Ronnie James ($261,194), Jess Being Valiant ($173,610), world record holder Valiant War Hero ($127,012) and Call Her Hero ($113,822).

Sam Crow is one of three winners from six starters out of the graded stakes-winning Chicks Beduino mare Bourbonstreetchick. An earner of $79,555, Bourbonstreetchick has produced the earners of more than $163,000, including the stakes-winning Teller Cartel gelding Corona Street.

Breeder: Paris Wixon of Hope Hull, Alabama, has bred nine winners and the earners of more than $204,000 from 31 starters.
