A top-10 all-time leading trainer, Michael W. “Mike” Joiner has conditioned the earners of more than $18.1 million, including Thunderball B’s sire, champion FDD Dynasty, and FDD Dynasty’s champion daughter Kates Dynasty. Joiner went into the trials having sent out the winners of 611 races from 3,640 starters. On the first day of trials, Joiner also sent out G.R. Carter to win the 10th trial aboard qualifier Tempting Destiny. With qualifiers Thunderball B and Tempting Destiny in this year’s All American Futurity, Joiner works hand in hand with his son Cody, who also is one of the sport’s leading trainers and has conditioned the earners of more than $2.17 million.

G.R. Carter Jr. is the all-time-everything rider in American Quarter Horse racing. The 10-time AQHA champion jockey is the all-time leader by money, having ridden the earners of more than $65.8 million, and by wins, having gone into the trials with scores aboard 3,663 winners from 23,141 starts. Carter has won the All American Futurity (G1) twice, on Falling In Loveagain in 1998 and on world champion Stolis Winner in 2008. On the first day of trials, Carter won seven of the 14 heats and was aboard four of the five finalists qualified on Thursday afternoon.

Purchased at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $75,000 by Mark Allen’s Double Eagle Ranch at Roswell, New Mexico, Tempting Destiny races for the Santa Teresa, New Mexico-based partnership of Allen, Dr. Leonard Blach, Henry “Butch” Southway and Linda Joiner. Blach owns and manages the breeding farm Buena Suerte Equine at Roswell, and in 2009 he and Allen triumphed in Thoroughbred racing by winning the Kentucky Derby with Mind That Bird (TB) and in Quarter Horse racing by winning the Ruidoso Derby (G1) with Time For A Cigar.

D-1) Tempting Destiny - Qualifying time: :21.529

Making his fourth career start, Tempting Destiny won the 10th trial in :21.529. Ridden in each of his races by G.R. Carter Jr., the gelding broke his maiden on first asking, in his May 23 trial to the Ruidoso Futurity (G1). He finished seventh in the June 8 final won by Kiss My Hocks, and then returned to finish second by a nose in the July 4 trials to the Rainbow Futurity (G1).

Tempting Destiny is one of 19 winners and the earners of more than $1.53 million from 48 starters by sophomore sire Tempting Dash, who in 2009 was the champion 2-year-old colt after going undefeated in four career starts through the Grade 1 Dash For Cash and Texas Classic futurities at Lone Star Park. Tempting Dash has sired stakes winners Kiss My Hocks ($689,680), who won the June 8 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) and finished second in the July 20 Rainbow Futurity (G1); Heritage Place Futurity (G1) winner Lovethewayyoulie ($456,322); and Firecracker Futurity (G2) winner Hezadashinbye ($142,362); and the stakes-placed A Dashing Valentine, who finished third in the April 20 Remington Park Juvenile Invitational (R).

Tempting Destiny is the first winner from three starters out of the stakes-winning Dashingfordestiny ($56,961), who in 2010 scored in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby (RG3) at Sam Houston Race Park after competing the previous season in the Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos. A mare by Mr Jess Perry, Dashingfordestiny is out of the champion Dash For Cash mare Dashing Phoebe ($609,553), who has produced two champions, three other stakes winners, 10 other winners and the earners of more than $2.37 million from 18 starters. Included among Dashing Phoebe’s foals are champion and All American Futurity (G1) winner Heartswideopen ($1,885,283, by Feature Mr Jess), champion Special Phoebe ($139,963, by Special Effort), and stakes winners Furyofthewind ($70,554, by Corona Cartel) and Solid Demand ($35,285, by Special Effort).

Tempting Destiny is bred by Kirk M. Goodfellow of Nacogdoches, Texas. Since 1984, Goodfellow has been represented as breeder by champion and All American Futurity (G1) winner Heartswideopen ($1,885,283), five other stakes winners, 43 other winners and the earners of more than $3.24 million from 95 starters.
